Our new programme kicks off on Tuesday evening 11th November with an illustrated talk entitled: “River In Time”. Derbyshire writer and photographer Christine Gregory will explain how human activity over time has had an impact on the little River Bradford and on its wildlife. Her wonderful photographs of the area, its plants and animals bring the habitat to life. Please join us at the Bridge Street Methodist Church, Bridge St, Mansfield NG18 1AL, upstairs in the Main Hall (disabled access is available). For directions to the car park and venue, please see attached. The talk will start at 7pm and we ask for a donation of £3 to cover costs and refreshments.
On Saturday 15th November you can come along for another in the ongoing series of Portland Park Walks with Ian O’Brien. These take place on the 3rd Saturday of every month, with those interested in a gentle nature walk setting off at 10am from the Portland Park Visitor Centre, Lindleys Lane, Kirkby in Ashfield NG17 9AL. Walks finish at about 11:30am. For further details contact NWT’s Karen Bennett on 07974 973 598.
Those looking to help manage an import local wildlife site are asked to come along to Rainworth Heath (just off the A617) on Sunday 16th November, from 10 am, to lop some broom and share some laughs. Any questions, contact Shlomo on (01623) 640134. And if you are keen for more of the physical volunteering, there is a work day from 10am on Tuesday 18th November at Spa Ponds (Forest Town, Mansfield) organised by the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.
All are welcome on Wednesday evening 19th November to listen to Andy Gaunt who will talk about Mercian Archaeological Services’ Sherwood Forest Archaeology Project, from 7pm in the Lounge of the Forest Town Welfare (Arena). £2 suggested donation. Learn about Medieval Sherwood Forest, its and administration and the Forest law. Also the landscape of the forest, the woods and the heath famous as the haunt of outlaws, the Royal Palace in Kings Clipstone at its heart, and the romantic hunting landscape that surrounded it. The talk will cover much of the latest archaeological research by Mercian Archaeological Services CIC in Sherwood Forest including King John’s Palace, St Edwin’s Chapel and Robin Hood’s Village of Edwinstowe.
There are still some places left for this year’s Sherwood Habitats Forum event, which will be taking place at The Newstead Centre on Thursday 20th November. Details will arrive in a separate e-mail message (apologies for double posting). The annual event will this year include talks from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s Ruth Testa, RSPB’s Carl Cornish, The Forestry Commission’s Amy Chandler, Birklands Ringing Group’s Andy Lowe and many more! Places are limited, so please e-mail Ian Major to reserve your place. A charge of £10.00 per delegate is requested as a contribution towards costs. For answers to any questions you might have about this event, please contact Ian Major, Community Heritage Landscape Officer at The Sherwood Forest Trust, by e-mail to: ian.major@sherwoodforesttrust.org.uk or telephone (01623) 821490.
